Recommended: The End of Democracy

I recommend the Sunday Politico story entitled The Shocking Paper Predicting the End of Democracy. Dr Rosenberg's original paper, which is the basis of this report, is entitled Democracy Devouring Itself: The Rise of the Incompetent Citizen and the Appeal of Right-Wing Populism, can be found online here at the US Irvine website.

My only dissent from his thesis is that populism as a simple-minded answer is no longer the province of just the right-wing, the left-wing seems to be adopting it as well, as evidenced by all the populist proposals being floated by the Democratic presidential candidates these days.
